Feeling a little stuck on your entertainment options? Here are some helpful suggestions!
One of the most critical parts of the wedding reception is the atmosphere – do you want your guests to feel like they are at a formal, classic soiree? Or a laid-back relaxing gathering? Do you want your guests up on the dancefloor partying the night away? Or do you want them chatting and mingling into the evening?
The forms of entertainment you choose will help define this mood, so it is important that you plan this out carefully. We’ve put together a list below of some common and unique forms of entertainment to help you out!
Firstly, the biggie: DJ or Band?
DJ The most versatile entertainment choice at a wedding reception is a DJ. For starters, a DJ is generally less expensive than live entertainment, and you can build a customised playlist based on the music that you love.
Before choosing a DJ, however, make sure you meet with them first – this is really important so you can gauge their personality and style to ensure it aligns with your own and your vision for your wedding.
Band If live entertainment is more your style, then a band is the perfect choice for you. Whether you’re looking for rock, big band, folk, or even a country sound, selecting the right band will transform your reception and wow your guests.
Make sure you meet with the band, listen to their sets live and check their versatility prior to choosing – you want to make sure your playlist is compatible, and that they fit in with your style.
And if neither of those fit your budget or style? Why don’t you think about hiring a jukebox or speakers that you can project your own playlist through?
Depending on the style of your wedding, the retro nature of a jukebox may be the perfect thing for you. Your guests will be able to select their own songs and make sure that everyone is up dancing to their favourite songs all night.
Likewise, connecting a laptop or smartphone to wired speakers in the venue will allow you complete flexibility to determine the entire playlist, and the order of the songs. This generally a cost-effective measure as well.
However, do keep in mind that there are some downsides to this DIY approach to entertainment – you’ll need to ensure you have appropriate sound gear; someone will generally have to keep an eye on it all night; and of course, you run the risk that guests may override song choices with songs that you don’t like or don’t fit the mood.
Aside from the major entertainment, here are a few unique forms of entertainment that will engage your guests:
Magician If you want to add a little quirkiness to your wedding, then think about hiring a roving magician to work their way around to your guests, performing tricks to wow and entertain them.
Lawn Games Lawn games are especially useful if you have both the ceremony and reception at the same venue, and need to keep your guests occupied in between. Think giant Jenga or chess, croquet, or even an adult bouncy castle!
String Quartet/Harpist Perfect for a formal or romantic wedding, string musicians can bring an air of elegance, whilst leaving a lasting impression on your guests.
Circus Performers Okay this one sounds a bit outrageous, but it really isn’t! If your theme is a bit luxe or romantic, then having a few ribbon twirling or fire breathing or acrobatic performers quietly performing in the background is a fantastic way to wow your guests and make your wedding memorable.
Whatever you choose to entertain your guests, make sure you stay true to what you and your partner want to do and what atmosphere you want to create for the night.
